According to a recent update from transfer expert Alan Nixon on his Patreon, Rangers’ scouts faced disappointment on their recent mission, as target Ryan Alebiosu missed Blackburn Rovers’ latest pre-season match due to a minor illness. Rangers weren’t the only club interested; Premier League side Brentford also sent representatives to track the right-back.
The England-born Nigeria international rose through Arsenal‘s youth system before heading out on loan to Crewe Alexandra in League One, later playing for Kilmarnock under manager Derek McInnes. Arsenal chose not to retain their academy graduate, allowing him to continue his career at Belgium with top-tier club KV Kortrijk.
After a limited role with De Kerels, Alebiosu spent the latter half of the 2024-25 season on loan with St Mirren. His standout performances in Scotland caught the attention of Blackburn, leading to a €576k transfer to Ewood Park in the summer of 2025. Despite the team’s struggles in the English Championship, the 24-year-old emerged as a bright spot thanks to his speed, strength, and tenacity. Following their escape from relegation, Blackburn has now set a significant £8m asking price for their valued asset amid interest from northern clubs.

Why Rangers Should Consider Him as Tavernier’s Successor
Rangers are in the process of revamping their squad under new head coach McInnes, who has taken over from Danny Rohl. The club has made a significant investment, bringing in six new players this transfer window and aiming for a few more additions as they look to address the need for reinforcements following numerous summer departures.

The defensive line has been particularly impacted by the return of players such as Nasser Djiga, Max Aarons, Jayden Meghoma, and Derek Cornelius, who have returned to their parent clubs Wolves, Bournemouth, Brentford, and Marseille upon completing their loans. With John Souttar is expected to depart soon, while the Gers have already signed Ross McCrorie and Ben Godfrey as part of their defensive recruitment, with more signings anticipated, as confirmed by the manager.
However, the departure of James Tavernier has created a significant gap on the right flank. Both Dujon Sterling and McCrorie are versatile squad options, but Rangers are looking for a high-profile signing to step into Tavernier’s shoes. Alebiosu is known for his athleticism, speed, relentless forward runs, and superb crossing ability. While he may occasionally be out of position or lose focus defensively, his skill set is well-aligned with the demands of a modern fullback. Rangers are likely to continue monitoring him in Blackburn’s upcoming pre-season fixtures.
