Over the past two summers, Real Madrid has encountered scrutiny regarding their midfield following the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The club opted not to find a replacement for Kroos after his exit, which affected their performance last season. However, they have chosen to rely on their current squad once more this year.
This decision comes despite Xabi Alonso’s apparent interest in acquiring a controlling midfielder. One of the reasons communicated to fans through local media is that the club’s hierarchy doubted there was a midfielder available on the market who justified a significant investment. Spain and Manchester City star Rodri Hernandez was one of the few players who might have fit that description, but he is still recovering from a serious knee injury.

Rodri Hernandez Contract Update
Additionally, it makes strategic sense for Los Blancos to wait until next summer to pursue Rodri, who will have only one year left on his contract at that time. Despite Manchester City having engaged in talks about a new deal in the summer, these discussions appear to have stalled. According to DM (via Diario AS), City is holding off on a long-term agreement until they evaluate the player’s recovery from his knee issues.

Opportunity Awaits for Real Madrid
If Rodri enters the summer without a long-term contract, it certainly opens the door for Real Madrid to make a move. Much like Manchester City, they will closely monitor Rodri’s recovery this year to determine whether they are comfortable committing a significant sum, especially with Rodri set to turn 30 next year.
This season, Rodri has played 415 minutes for City across eight matches. However, due to various injuries, he has missed nine games, indicating that he is still working to regain his full fitness.
