Real Madrid 1-1 Girona
Real Madrid’s title ambitions took another hit on Friday night as they faced Girona. Despite dominating much of the first half, they eased off after taking the lead, allowing the Catalan side to re-enter the match. Girona’s Michel Sanchez managed to hold off Real Madrid’s advances throughout the game.

The home side made several changes to the starting lineup for the visit of Girona, with Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, Eder Militao, and Brahim Diaz all returning to play. Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior retained their spots up front, and the former had an early opportunity that was impressively cleared off the line. However, this was the best chance Real Madrid would see for some time, with Azzedine Ounahi also testing Andriy Lunin early on.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s side pressed forward, creating opportunities around the box but failed to capitalize. Fede Valverde forced a spectacular save from Paulo Gazzaniga, while Dani Carvajal and Jude Bellingham made some vibrant runs. Nonetheless, their attack lacked sharpness as they went into the break, with muted whistles echoing from the crowd – music to Girona’s ears.
Girona Capitalize on Lackluster Real Madrid
The second half began with Vinicius Junior stepping up his game against Girona, yet the final touch was still missing. Real Madrid began to find more openings; Brahim Diaz threw the ball back into play six minutes after the restart, and when it reached Valverde at the edge of the box, the Uruguayan made no mistake as he unleashed a powerful shot that Gazzaniga failed to hold onto.

However, after taking the lead, there was a noticeable easing of intensity from Real Madrid, which Girona quickly exploited. Just ten minutes later, as Los Blancos struggled to pressure Girona outside their box, Thomas Lemar curled a stunning strike into the bottom corner from a similar position to Valverde’s earlier shot, leaving Lunin with no chance.
With time running out and the home crowd growing anxious, Real Madrid surged forward. Not finding success through the middle, Kylian Mbappe drifted to the right, where he began to threaten. He had one shot easily held by Gazzaniga and also appealed for a penalty in the dying minutes. As the match entered stoppage time, the chances for Real Madrid felt insubstantial for a team desperate to maintain their title challenge, and Girona remained calm, defending comfortably as they had against Villarreal.
As the final whistle blew, Girona celebrated modestly, feeling satisfied with a job well done rather than ecstatic. For Arbeloa, there would be concerns over the fact that Real Madrid created only one clear chance in the last half-hour despite needing a goal. This could reflect the team’s focus, perhaps indicating that many players were already setting their sights on the upcoming Champions League fixture next week.
