Richard Hughes £29m…

Liverpool signed Giorgi Mamardashvili last summer.

After showcasing his talent for Georgia at Euro 2024, Richard Hughes decided to secure the goalkeeper’s services. However, Mamardashvili remained on loan at LaLiga club Valencia for the 2024/25 season before joining Liverpool.

Unfortunately, his time at Merseyside has been frustrating so far, as he has not managed to compete with Alisson Becker for a starting position.

Recent reports from El Desmarque suggest that the goalkeeper’s patience is wearing thin, labeling his move to Liverpool a failure.

“The initial plan was to sign him, loan him to Valencia CF for a year, and then bring him to Liverpool to eventually replace Alisson Becker,” the report states. “However, those hopes have not materialized, leaving him disheartened.”

Giorgi Mamardashvili: Situation Overview

Giorgi Mamardashvili officially joined Liverpool in the 2025-26 season after a pre-arranged transfer from Valencia, signing for approximately €35 million on a long-term contract as Alisson’s understudy and potential successor.

He has made several appearances in the Premier League and participated in Champions League and domestic matches, providing Arne Slot a chance to evaluate him in crucial games without threatening Alisson’s position.

His performances have largely aligned with scouting expectations: he possesses a large physique, demonstrates aggression in his area, shows excellent reflexes, and has a strong presence in one-on-one situations, although he has had some shaky moments during crosses and is still adjusting to Liverpool’s playing style.

Inside the club, his first year is viewed as a period of acclimatization rather than a final judgment.

The pressing question for the 2026-27 season is whether he will move into a genuine succession plan should Alisson’s availability become an issue or whether Liverpool will see him as a valuable asset in a market that recognizes his capability to perform for a Champions League side.

Analysis

As reports indicate the player has become dissatisfied, it appears Valencia is considering a reunion. The report notes that there is a strong possibility that Los Che will pursue a new starting goalkeeper this off-season.

Furthermore, an attempt to re-sign their “idol” Mamardashvili could be in the works.

“Valencia CF is closely monitoring Mamardashvili’s next move, especially as they would receive compensation for training rights if a transfer were to take place (this allows clubs that trained a player between the ages of 12 and 23 to collect 5% of the transfer fee, with Valencia receiving 1%). Additionally, they hold a 10% stake in any future sale,” the report indicates.

“It’s also important to remember that Valencia CF is in search of a goalkeeper for the next season, and Giorgi has left the door open for a return to Mestalla, where he is celebrated.”

This puts Liverpool in a position where they may have to decide: either meet Mamardashvili’s desire for first-team football by selling or reconsidering Alisson’s role, or allow the Georgian to depart and move forward.
