Ronaldo: This will be my…

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that this will be his final World Cup as he gears up to take on Spain with Portugal in Monday’s round of 16 match in Arlington, Texas.

At 41, Ronaldo has participated in six World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and now 2026. He made history as the first player to score in six World Cups by finding the net against Uzbekistan during the group stage.

The upcoming 2030 World Cup is set to be jointly hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

“The key is to enjoy it as much as possible,” Ronaldo stated during a pre-match news conference on Sunday. “This will be my last World Cup, but hopefully tomorrow isn’t my last game.”

“The day will come when I retire from international football. But if I’m honest, whatever happens tomorrow, I will leave with a clear conscience—not just 100%, but 1000%. I’ve given everything to the sport. I don’t need it; I have a good life. But it’s a passion. I play football because I love it… You have to cherish each day. I’ve scored three goals so far [in this World Cup], so I can’t complain, right?”

Ronaldo scored twice against Uzbekistan and converted a penalty against Croatia in the round of 32, marking his first goal in a knockout stage match at a World Cup.

“It’s been incredible,” he remarked when reflecting on his tournament experience. “It’s about more than just the matches… This is the World Cup I’ll remember most due to the passion of the people. It’s even more intense this time; I can’t explain why. This has been emotionally the best experience. I’ve truly enjoyed it.”

Having previously won the 2016 European Championship with Portugal, Ronaldo emphasized that he doesn’t need a World Cup victory to complete his legacy.

“I don’t lack anything in life,” he stated. “Winning the World Cup won’t change who I am. We possess the talent to win, but only one nation can claim the title… Age bestows maturity and experience.”

“I am thankful even for the criticisms I’ve faced, especially turning 40—I hope to live another 40 years. It’s through challenges that we grow the most as individuals, and I appreciate the journalists for that,” he added.

When asked about the Spanish star Lamine Yamal, who is only 18, Ronaldo said, “He has a bright future ahead. However, I see Spain as a collective; they all have talent. The more prepared you are, the better you can maintain a long career in football, should you desire that. If you pay attention to criticism, you’re bound to fail.”

“Constructive criticism exists, but there’s also criticism meant to undermine you. To sustain a long career, you need to adapt and focus on the love and passion from the fans. Over time, I’ve learned to connect with those who appreciate me and my work,” he concluded.

Ahead of their upcoming match, Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his admiration for Ronaldo, stating, “I’m a fan of Cristiano. I admire players with ambition, character, and unwavering drive who strive for constant improvement. They serve as role models for the youth. We must remain vigilant of him at all times. While we don’t need to mark him every move, we must respect the talent and class he brings.”
