Scottish Premiership:…

Over 20 Premiership players from last season earned call-ups to World Cup squads this summer.

Naturally, a number turned out for Scotland in the United States, while others have seen limited minutes.

Even so, several have stood out at the finals and remain in the mix as the tournament approaches the last-16 stage.

Celtic’s Alistair Johnston has played every minute at right-back for co-hosts Canada, and club-mate Auston Trusty has appeared twice for the USA, scoring once.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin came off the bench with Belgium two goals down to Senegal in the last 32 and helped spark a remarkable 3-2 comeback.

Thelo Aasgaard, also of Rangers, has featured just once for Norway but netted a superb goal in defeat to tournament favourites France.

Celtic duo Daizen Maeda and Benjamin Nygren suffered knockout heartbreak, though Maeda again impressed for Japan, scoring against Nygren’s Sweden in the group stage.

Old Firm players regularly make an impact at major finals, but Elijah Just’s displays for New Zealand surprised many.

The Motherwell attacking midfielder struck three goals in three games for his country, who exited in the group phase.

The Premiership player-of-the-year nominee certainly left his mark, further stoking speculation about his future at Fir Park.

“I hope he’s busy,” said the Celtic-linked Just of his agent after New Zealand’s elimination.
