Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United bolstered their chances of finishing in the top four with a solid 1-0 victory against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Friday.
The only match in the Premier League on Boxing Day saw the Red Devils take an early lead thanks to a clever volley from Patrick Dorgu. Despite Newcastle gaining the upper hand before halftime, they failed to convert their dominance into an equalizer.

Man United came close to doubling their lead with a shot from Diogo Dalot in the closing quarter of the match, but they primarily focused on defending against Newcastle’s possession-heavy play during the second half.
This match marked the first time this season that United played without Bruno Fernandes, yet they managed to secure all three points—an accomplishment even without the festive flair.
Ruben Amorim’s Reaction: Reflections on the Victory Against Newcastle United
Thoughts on the game: “We certainly had to endure some challenges at the stadium; it was tough for us. I believe we played well in the first half, but the second half was predominantly about defense and attempting to create opportunities with Cunha. We had several transition chances. We’ve had many games where we performed well but came away empty-handed. Today was different. We endured together and achieved three points.”

“We spend a lot of time together as a team. We’ve faced some low moments, which often lead to positive outcomes for the group. It’s great to have experienced players guiding the younger ones. Every player contributed to the effort.”
What contributed to the success of the back four? “In the first half, it became clear that deploying a back four and having many players in central positions was our best chance to create more danger and opportunities. Even in terms of ball retention, I recall losing a one-on-one here last year. We aimed to anticipate the game’s flow and make the players feel more comfortable.”
Did Dorgu benefit from the tactical shift? “Absolutely. We positioned him more forward, which shifted the responsibility and allowed him greater freedom to take risks. It positively impacted his performance. Even Manu [Ugarte] played exceptionally well. Players must realize that in football, one day can be great, and the next may not.”
Mason Mount injury update: “He felt something at halftime and wanted to return for the second half, but we can’t afford to lose any more players. Jack performed admirably in his stead.”

Jack Fletcher’s performance: “This is a significant moment for him. He’ll get feedback from his father, Darren, who will discuss numerous aspects, but he needs to stay composed and receive praise, as he is truly humble, works diligently, and deserves it.”
And a clean sheet: “With a clean sheet from the back four, I really don’t need to hold a press conference! All topics are addressed; Kobbie Mainoo is injured, so we can go home and enjoy Boxing Day.”
