Ferland Mendy’s struggle with injuries, which has persisted since 2024, is set to take another turn as the Real Madrid defender prepares for yet another surgery. The French player had been regaining his form under Carlo Ancelotti, but frequent fitness issues have severely limited his availability over the past two seasons.
Mendy has been somewhat inconsistent lately, but was called up to start by Alvaro Arbeloa in Sunday’s match against Espanyol, during which Los Blancos secured a 2-0 victory. Unfortunately, Mendy’s game ended just 10 minutes in when he pulled up in the middle of a sprint, requiring a substitution for Fran Garcia.

Mendy Set for Another Surgery
According to Marca, Mendy is scheduled to undergo surgery to address a hamstring tear in his right leg. While a specific recovery timeline has not been established, estimates suggest he could be sidelined for up to five months. This prolonged absence may extend into the start of next season, with a possible return in October. It could also diminish any prospects of him moving to another club this summer, as Mendy’s contract runs until 2028.
Real Madrid’s Ongoing Injury Crisis
Mendy’s season concludes with just nine appearances and a mere 448 minutes on the pitch, a stark contrast to the 31 games he played last season, accumulating over 2,000 minutes. This year alone has seen him suffer five distinct injuries, beginning with recovery from previous surgery.

In total, Real Madrid has recorded 120 injury incidents over the last two seasons, with Mendy and Eder Militao exemplifying the team’s difficulties in maintaining a healthy squad. Militao underwent surgery last week and is also expected to be out for five months. Reflecting on the squad that won the Champions League, none of Dani Carvajal, Militao, or Mendy have been able to stay injury-free since that success.
