Serie A Breakout Talent…

This season, Real Madrid has enjoyed a fantastic start, largely attributed to the solid defensive structure that has thrived under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.

The pairing of Eder Militao and Dean Huijsen in central defense has proven effective, but a significant amount of credit also goes to Alvaro Carreras, who has been a standout performer for Los Blancos since returning to the club last summer.

Xabi Alonso’s Trust in Carreras

According to Defensa Central, signing Carreras was a priority for Xabi Alonso as soon as he took over.

Even with Fran García and Ferland Mendy already in the squad, Alonso recognized that his tactical approach needed a full-back capable of cutting inside, dribbling, and contributing to offensive plays.

Alonso’s confidence in Carreras remained steadfast, despite doubts that arose regarding the young player’s transition from Benfica, especially given the high transfer fee and lack of high-level experience.

Time has vindicated the coach’s decision, as Carreras has outperformed Huijsen, who is still facing criticism and shows lingering signs of “footballing immaturity.”

In contrast, Carreras consistently executes his responsibilities well, commits few errors, and exhibits the strong character essential for success.

His significance to the team is underscored by his playing time; he is the only outfield player to have completed six consecutive matches at full-time—an achievement even Kylian Mbappé hasn’t matched.

Interestingly, despite his impressive performances, he has yet to receive a call-up from Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente. For Madrid, this may be a silver lining, as it allows Carreras a 15-day recovery period during the international break.
