Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard criticized Reds manager Arne Slot, suggesting he should stop referencing low blocks. Gerrard’s comments came after Slot attributed the team’s inconsistent performances to opponents who defend deeply.
On Wednesday evening, Liverpool secured a 3-0 victory over Marseille at the Stade Velodrome, overcoming a potentially challenging away match. Following the triumph, Slot commended his squad.
However, when asked about the reason for achieving a consistent winning streak, the 47-year-old stated, “I understand our inconsistency, largely due to the difference between playing an open game and facing a low block.”
“You can’t compare tonight’s game, where both teams were eager to press and build from the back. Our inconsistency stems from our difficulties against low blocks,” he added.

While Gerrard praised his former team’s performance, he stressed that Slot “needs to stop referencing low blocks” and focus on developing solutions.
“I’m genuinely happy for him [Slot] since dealing with pressure and inconsistent results is tough. But his tactics worked excellently tonight, and he deserves plenty of credit,” Gerrard commented.
“However, he must stop focusing on low blocks. Liverpool has faced these challenges for many years, long before my time. Opponents will always try to find ways to thwart Liverpool’s efforts. The key is identifying solutions. The players have the ability; it’s about finding ways to convert those low block matches into wins instead of draws.”

After a shaky start to their title defense, Liverpool has struggled in the Premier League, with the recent draw against Burnley marking their fourth stalemate in five matches.
Gerrard emphasized that the team will continue to encounter low blocks as they pursue European qualification, with the Reds currently sitting in fourth place, just one point ahead of Manchester United in fifth.
“This is the challenge they will consistently face,” the 45-year-old explained. “They’ll likely confront a low block again against Bournemouth this weekend. They must be ruthless, tap into their skills, and ensure their top players step up to score the goals necessary for victory, as these matches are hard to win.”
Liverpool’s next league fixture is against Bournemouth on Saturday, January 24, kicking off at 5:30 PM. They will also play their final Champions League match against Qarabag at Anfield on Wednesday, January 28.
