The Journey of Ukrainian…

Ukrainian striker Danylo Sikan is reportedly facing an extended absence from the remainder of the season. Having joined Anderlecht for €4 million in January, Sikan has struggled to secure a regular spot in the first team. According to reports from HLN, he is now expected to miss the rest of the season due to pubalgia. The publication also provided insights regarding the circumstances surrounding his transfer, highlighting discrepancies between the head coach and the player recruitment team.

With limited financial resources, Anderlecht took a considerable risk in acquiring Sikan. In an interview with HLN, Besnik Hasi, the former head coach, expressed his disapproval of the signing, stating, ‘Not at the end of the summer, not in the winter. Not at all.’ Hopes were high for Sikan to replicate his impressive form from Shakhtar Donetsk, where he netted 29 goals in 93 appearances. He later joined Trabzonspor in January 2025, managing seven goals in 34 matches.

Olivier Renard, the former Sporting Director, shared his perspective on the transfer, indicating that he initially sought to bring Sikan on loan with an option to buy. However, negotiations with Trabzonspor fell through. By the time Sikan became available, Trabzonspor was only interested in a sale. Reports from HLN suggest that concerns arose during Sikan’s medical examination, yet the club proceeded with the purchase due to their urgent need for a striker.

Should surgery be required to address Sikan’s pubalgia, it may take some time for him to recover, but it could ultimately be the best solution for a full return to fitness. Once back in shape, he may finally be able to demonstrate the potential that convinced his new club to sign him. As Renard remarked, ‘In my opinion, he is still a good player’.
