Raheem Sterling has finally turned a corner at Stamford Bridge, with him and Chelsea mutually agreeing to terminate his contract, which was set to run until January 28, 2026. This decision follows a disappointing loan period at Arsenal, where he managed just one goal in 28 appearances. According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, West Ham appears to be leading the charge to secure his signature.
Sterling’s Departure and West Ham’s Fight for Survival
Fulham and Crystal Palace have also expressed interest in the 31-year-old winger. With several clubs considering a move, O’Rourke believes Sterling is open to various options, including lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League or MLS, rather than remaining in London.
“I don’t think Sterling has made any definitive decision on his future. He is open to all options. He is more than happy to consider moves outside of London. He could be interested in a move away from the Premier League,” he stated during the Transfer Insider podcast.
“Napoli showed interest in the former England international over the summer; however, their sporting director noted that while they admire Sterling, completing a deal would be challenging due to financial constraints.”
“I anticipate interest from the Saudi Pro League, as well as the MLS and Turkey. Despite his tough time at Chelsea in recent seasons, Sterling won’t lack options.”
Does West Ham Need Sterling?
West Ham is facing a precarious situation, currently sitting in 18th place in the Premier League under Nuno Espírito Santo. The team has conceded 48 goals in just 24 matches, indicating serious defensive issues and challenges in their overall setup.

Fans have been critical of the club’s recruitment strategy, pointing out that the squad appears older and slower compared to the dynamic play of other top teams. While Jarrod Bowen continues to pose a threat up front, the departure of Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham in the previous summer left a significant gap, with January signing Adama Traoré yet to fill that void.
Acquiring Sterling on a free transfer could be a gamble for West Ham. The club is in a crucial fight to avoid relegation this May, and Sterling’s recent performances suggest a decline in confidence, having been sidelined by coaches Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior at Chelsea.
If Sterling opts against joining West Ham and chooses to play abroad, it could represent a missed opportunity for the club, which desperately needs experienced leadership within the squad. However, his substantial wages could complicate the club’s financial situation.
The board must prioritize attracting younger, faster players. While missing out on a high-profile name like Sterling could hinder their survival chances, they might find greater success in signing enthusiastic players eager to engage in a challenging battle against relegation.
