Thomas Tuchel Urged to Make Bold Choices Ahead of the 2026 World Cup
As 2025 comes to a close, the countdown to the 2026 World Cup in the USA is well underway.
With Thomas Tuchel at the helm, England’s prospects look promising following an unbeaten World Cup Qualifying campaign in which they did not concede a single goal.
However, Tuchel faces several significant decisions regarding his squad selection and the composition of his starting eleven.
Former Manchester United champion Paul Parker recently shared his insights with EPL Index, highlighting some key issues to consider…
Anthony Gordon
This season has been challenging for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, who has only managed two goals and one assist in 13 Premier League matches. His lack of form has placed him on the periphery of discussions about the World Cup squad.
In particular, the stellar performances of players like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer further complicate his chances. Parker also mentioned Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze as a viable alternative for the wing position.
“I wouldn’t start Anthony Gordon at the World Cup,” Parker stated. “If Eberechi Eze isn’t deployed in the number ten role, I would opt for him on the left.”
“When Eze came on at Wembley on the left side, he was deserving of the man of the match award,” Parker added. “He excels in that role.”
“Gordon’s season has been subpar, with a few bench appearances and limited goal contributions, primarily from the penalty spot,” Parker remarked. “I don’t think he should be starting for England, especially with that hairstyle!”

Lewis Hall
In contrast, Parker had high praise for Lewis Hall, the left-back for Newcastle United. Despite facing some injury challenges, Hall has emerged as one of the standout performers for Eddie Howe’s squad this season.
Tuchel faces a significant challenge in selecting a left-back, as there is no clear frontrunner for the position.
“The left-back spot is a major dilemma for Tuchel,” Parker noted. “Right-back is straightforward since Reece James is the obvious choice and is by far the best option.”
“At left-back, he must choose someone who regularly plays,” Parker continued. “Lewis Hall comes to mind, as he was once a midfielder in Chelsea’s academy.”
“Hall is very composed on the ball and can bring balance to the team. He’s an excellent option,” Parker added. “He thrives under pressure and has gained valuable experience at a reputable club.”

“Ezri Konsa could also provide some depth in that position, along with younger talents like Myles Lewis-Skelly and Nico O’Reilly, who are starting to shine at Arsenal and Manchester City.”
