James Tilley, the returning winger for AFC Wimbledon, is optimistic about the team’s prospects this season after successfully steering clear of relegation last year.
The 27-year-old rejoined the club earlier this week from League One’s Wycombe Wanderers on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Tilley had joined Wycombe from Wimbledon in June 2025 after contributing to the club’s promotion through the League Two play-off final. He returned to the Dons on loan during the latter half of the 2025-26 season, playing a pivotal role in ensuring their survival in the third tier.
“Everyone at the club is determined to move forward and achieve more than we did last season,” he shared with BBC Radio London. “It’s going to be challenging since moving up a league means facing stronger competition with better players and larger clubs.”
“We understand that we may often be considered the underdogs in any match, but we have confidence in our abilities and believe we can compete with the best when we perform to our potential.”
Tilley’s initial stint at Plough Lane started in 2023 while the Dons were in League Two. During his loan last season, he made 13 appearances and scored twice.
“In football, you sometimes find a club that just feels right, and for me, that’s Wimbledon. My family and I are incredibly excited to be back,” he stated. “When I first signed, I learned so much about the club’s rich history and its commitment to playing the ‘Wimbledon way,’ including hearing Ivor Heller’s inspiring speech.”
“What stands out is the collective spirit—there are no individuals, and we all come together as one unit: the fans, players, and staff.”
Dons manager Jonnie Jackson identified Tilley’s signing as one of his key priorities this summer, a sentiment that Tilley found motivating as a player.
“It boosts your confidence knowing you are wanted, and that’s when you showcase your best performance—when you feel fully supported,” he remarked. “Our cohesion stems from having the right individuals within the club. Ever since our promotion, we’ve consistently worked hard for each other on the field.”
