Cristian Romero reflected that his five seasons at Tottenham were not without mistakes as his transfer to Atletico Madrid was finalized.
Atletico have paid £34.2m for the 28-year-old Argentina centre-back, who has signed a five-year contract.
Romero’s final appearance for Spurs came against Sunderland in April, when a knee injury forced him off in tears and sidelined him for the club’s last six Premier League matches.
With Tottenham fighting relegation, he sparked controversy by planning a trip to Argentina for the final day to watch his first club Belgrano in the Primera Division Apertura final.
He ultimately returned to England to attend Spurs’ 1-0 win over Everton, which secured survival and a 17th-place finish for the second straight season.
Posting on X, Romero acknowledged he wasn’t flawless but said he always gave his all, defending the shirt with pride and heart.
Signed from Atalanta in 2021, he became a defensive mainstay for Tottenham, making 156 appearances.
His standout moment was helping Spurs claim their first trophy in 17 years by defeating Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final.
Romero said his goal on arrival was to make history through hard work and sacrifice, ending the club’s long wait for silverware—and that they achieved it.
He added that while he’s moving on, part of his heart will remain with Spurs, and he will always feel a bond with the club and its supporters, closing with thanks and respect.
