Ibrahima Konate currently poses the biggest contractual dilemma for Liverpool.
The 26-year-old’s existing contract runs until 2026, which means he could leave the club for free at the end of the season without a new agreement.

This scenario would undoubtedly be a major setback for the Reds, who invested significantly in the centre-back after bringing him over from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million.
The France international struggled with injuries in his earlier seasons with the club, only solidifying his position as Virgil van Dijk’s preferred partner during the Premier League title-winning campaign in 2024/25.
Liverpool risk a repeat of the TAA situation
Losing him just a year after clinching the title, and without compensation, would be incredibly disappointing.
Konate reportedly earns £140k per week at Anfield and is rumored to be seeking £200k to extend his contract. However, there are no assurances he would accept any offer, as he appears to have aspirations of joining Real Madrid.
Real Madrid could provide a more lucrative deal; for instance, their current backup centre-back David Alaba reportedly earns around €400k per week. If financial incentives are Konate’s primary concern, Liverpool may struggle to compete.
They found themselves in a similar predicament with Trent Alexander-Arnold last year – a player who opted for a lucrative transfer to the Bernabeu, effectively sacrificing two decades with Liverpool.
Liverpool is significantly stronger than Madrid
However, Trent’s experiences should serve as a cautionary tale for Konate should he wish to pursue a move to Madrid. Firstly, there’s no certainty that Trent will become the first-choice right-back for the Spanish giants.
Currently, he seems to be competing with Dani Carvajal, and Xabi Alonso has also utilized Fede Valverde in that position when needed.
Alexander-Arnold has had limited playing time due to injuries and hasn’t yet found his rhythm during his occasional appearances. Konate could easily fall into a similar situation.
Moreover, Konate must recognize a crucial fact: Liverpool is a far superior club compared to Real Madrid. If winning major honors is his priority, he is in the ideal place.

Scholes critiques Madrid harshly
“He probably left a better team to go to a worse team,” Paul Scholes remarked in a recent episode of Stick to Football.
On Tuesday, we witnessed undeniable evidence of Liverpool’s dominance.
Madrid visited Anfield for a Champions League group stage match, which the Reds won decisively thanks to an Alexis Mac Allister goal.
The score barely reflects the match’s reality, as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and others were effectively sidelined during the game.
Trent came off the bench without making a significant impact, leaving with a clear realization that he is now on a less competitive team.

Trent’s journey should be a cautionary tale for Konate
Madrid is likely to dominate LaLiga this season, having lost only once thus far, but based on current form, they may not have a robust Champions League campaign.
This situation forces Konate to weigh his options carefully: accept a lucrative offer from Madrid with the risk of potential mediocrity in his prime years, or remain and compete for major honors at Anfield, albeit for slightly less money initially.
He must choose his next move wisely, and Trent’s experiences should serve as a significant warning.
