Tuchel: England to keep…

England boss Thomas Tuchel says his side will adopt Gareth Southgate’s penalty-shootout approach at the World Cup.

England face DR Congo in Wednesday’s first knockout round, a tie that could be decided on spot-kicks.

The Atlanta match kicks off at 17:00 BST and will be shown live on BBC One and iPlayer.

Before Southgate took charge in 2016, England’s record in major tournament shootouts was poor, with just one win from seven.

His tenure brought a more rigorous preparation, helping England win three of their four shootouts under him.

Tuchel confirmed those methods remain in place with the current squad.

He said the FA has run a long-standing programme for penalties, and the team will follow it.

He added that both staff and players have a clear process and feel well prepared.

Tuchel admitted he has previously been caught out by shootouts, recalling that in 2016 he neglected specific preparation when his Borussia Dortmund side met Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal final.

After a 0-0 draw, Bayern won 4-3 on penalties, leaving Tuchel to choose his takers in the short window between extra time and the shootout.

He described it as a painful lesson that left a lasting mark, vowing it would not happen again.

While confident and already settled on a likely order of takers, Tuchel cautioned that the moment is hard to replicate.

He noted that the unique pressure of a shootout is difficult to simulate in training.

Citing Thierry Henry, Tuchel said even great players can barely recall the walk from the halfway line to the spot during a first shootout—an experience you can’t fully rehearse.
