Tuchel Refuses to Let…

England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, stated that concerns regarding the pitch conditions for the upcoming friendly against New Zealand will not dictate player selections.

According to the Daily Mail, the surface at Raymond James Stadium, the home venue of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is a ‘plug and play’ pitch that was only installed a week prior to the match.

Several World Cup venues, which typically feature artificial turf, have recently been re-sodded with natural grass. Reports indicate that ground staff from the Football Association are working with stadium personnel to address issues with the pitch, which appeared uneven in photos.

Despite the imminent World Cup kickoff, Tuchel reassured that the state of the pitch “will not affect my team selection,” mentioning that he has received word the conditions “will be OK.” He expressed some initial concern after viewing a photo of the pitch but emphasized the need to evaluate it firsthand upon arrival.

“If there are any issues, we can always adapt,” Tuchel remarked during a press conference on Friday. Their plan is for each player to feature for 45 minutes in two complete teams, enabling balanced exposure before continuing their training regimen over the subsequent three days.

Currently based in West Palm Beach, Florida, England is set to face New Zealand on Saturday at 21:00 BST, marking the first of two warm-up matches, followed by a fixture against Costa Rica on June 10, just a day before the World Cup officially begins.

In training on Friday, England’s squad totaled 27 players, notably omitting Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka, as they participated in the Champions League final held on May 30. Additional Premier League players, including Josh King, Rio Ngumoha, Ethan Nwaneri, Alex Scott, and Jason Steele, have joined Tuchel’s squad to enhance training numbers.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson also joined after Crystal Palace triumphed in the Conference League final.

England May Manage Harry Kane’s Minutes

Tuchel conveyed that team captain Harry Kane appears to be in excellent shape. Kane netted 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich throughout the season, and Tuchel believes that the 32-year-old forward’s performance will not be hindered by the high temperatures in the U.S.

“The key is Harry’s current fitness. He is in top form and prepared to lead. He was pivotal in today’s defensive training session, setting the intensity,” Tuchel noted. “We shouldn’t worry about him during the heat and humidity. He has demonstrated his readiness throughout the week.”

Tuchel has additional striking options in Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney and hinted at the potential for managing Kane’s playtime in the two upcoming friendlies.

“Ideally, we could conserve some minutes for Harry,” Tuchel stated, but acknowledged the dilemma, “If the matches are competitive, do we really pull our top goalscorer and captain? Perhaps not.”

Kane remains a critical player for the team. While attention will be paid to ensure he stays fit, the aim is to maximize his presence on the field.

England is slated to transition from Florida to their World Cup training base in Kansas City, Missouri, where they will commence their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 17 in Dallas, Texas. Following this, they will face Ghana on June 23 in Massachusetts and conclude the group stage with a match against Panama on June 27 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Analysis: Opportunities for Fringe Players

Tuchel maintained a relaxed demeanor when addressing the media ahead of England’s first World Cup warm-up against New Zealand. Despite his concerns about the pitch conditions in Tampa, he revealed that players still have the chance to secure a spot in the starting XI for the opening World Cup match against Croatia.

He indicated that he has “14-15” players in mind for the starting lineup, but the friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica will be critical in determining the final team composition. By fielding two different teams in each half, Tuchel appears to be providing players the opportunity to impress.

There was also encouraging news regarding Elliot Anderson. If negotiations with Nottingham Forest progress positively, he might finalize his transfer to Manchester City as Tuchel confirmed that squad members would be allowed to conclude transfers as long as it does not disrupt their preparations.
