Italian media have taken a sharp stance against referee Daniele Chiffi in Inter Milan’s Supercoppa defeat to Bologna, particularly highlighting the necessity of VAR intervention on two key occasions to avert critical mistakes.
As reported by the Corriere dello Sport, the match began to head off course in the 33rd minute when Yann Bisseck handled the ball in the penalty area.

“The Inter defender attempts a header but makes contact with his arm, which is in an unauthorized position,” explains the Corriere.
The report indicates that Chiffi was effectively “rescued” by VAR, although it criticized the lengthy duration taken to arrive at a decision during the monitor review.

A similar situation arose in the second half.

Chiffi initially awarded a penalty to Inter for a challenge involving Ange-Yoan Bonny and Heggem.
Once more, VAR stepped in.
“The Inter forward seeks to draw a foul by extending his leg but instead collides with the Bologna defender,” the article states.
After reassessing the situation, Chiffi reversed his decision, reportedly acknowledging over the headset: “Inter’s number 14 did not incur a foul.”
Although both critical calls were rectified, Corriere dello Sport was still unimpressed with the overall refereeing performance.
The match concluded without any yellow cards being issued.
However, the publication described Chiffi’s management of fouls and physical plays as “confusing” throughout.

While VAR ensured the correctness of the pivotal decisions, Corriere’s assessment was resolute.
If not for technological support, the referee’s evening could have taken a significantly different, and much more contentious, turn.
