Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior has addressed the racist remarks he encountered during the Champions League round of 16 first-leg match against Benfica.
Although he scored the sole goal in the 1-0 victory in Lisbon, the match was interrupted when referee Francois Letexier activated anti-racism measures.
In light of yet another instance of the Brazilian forward facing alleged racial abuse from both players and fans, he took to his social media to respond.
“Racists are, above all, cowards,” he stated. “They need to cover their mouths with their shirts to demonstrate their weakness.”
“However, they are shielded by others who, in theory, should enforce consequences,” he added.
“What transpired today isn’t new for me or my family. I received a yellow card for celebrating my goal, a decision I still don’t understand.”
“On the other hand, there was just a poorly executed protocol that proved ineffective. I dislike finding myself in such situations, especially after a significant win when the focus should be on Real Madrid, but it is necessary to speak out.”
While it’s uncertain if UEFA will impose further sanctions, it is evident that the persistent issues of racism in football—highlighted by many prominent players and fans over the years—remain inadequately addressed.
