Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior has addressed speculation regarding his future, expressing his desire to remain with the club for the long term. The Brazilian forward is signed through 2027, but there have been no recent discussions about a contract extension.
Initial negotiations for a new deal began at the start of the last season, yet interest from Saudi Arabia led to a breakdown in talks. Reports suggest Vinicius hopes to become Real Madrid’s highest-paid player, joining Kylian Mbappe in that status, a request the club is hesitant to fulfill. Additionally, a strained relationship with Xabi Alonso has complicated his situation, with Vinicius reportedly stating he would not renew his contract if Alonso remained in charge.
However, the atmosphere seems to have improved under Alvaro Arbeloa, making it likely that Vinicius will continue his tenure at the club. He conveyed this optimism ahead of their Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
“I hope to stay here for a long time. I still have a year left on my contract, but I’m very calm. I have the president’s confidence. When the time is right, I’ll renew my contract and stay here for a long time because this is my dream club,” he remarked.
‘Comments on Defensive Work Rate are Frustrating’
This season, discussions around the apparent lack of synergy between Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe on the pitch have been prevalent.
“People say a lot of things. Kylian is here to help us; his goals provide us with confidence. We need to stay focused. Tomorrow is a tough match where great players can make a difference, and Mbappe is one of them,” he said.
Recently, Mbappe admitted that he doesn’t put in as much defensive effort as his teammates. Vinicius expressed his frustration over the scrutiny regarding their defensive roles.
“Of course it’s frustrating, but people are entitled to their opinions. We need to listen to the manager. External opinions don’t impact us. We can help each other improve,” he added.
Vinicius: ‘I’ve Faced Challenges this Season’
This season has been difficult for Vinicius, particularly due to incidents of racial abuse, including an allegation against Benfica’s Gialuca Prestianni in February. However, he feels he is now in better shape as the season progresses.
“I’m doing really well now. I’ve faced tough moments this season, including a period without scoring and being booed by fans, but it has all been a learning experience. I’m in good physical condition. Travelling with the national team adds complexity, but I’m working hard at the club and with my physiotherapist at home to be fully prepared for my team,” he stated.
Real Madrid will host Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night at 21:00 CEST for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with the return match set for April 15 at the Allianz Arena.
