Wales is the first home nation to withdraw support for Gianni Infantino’s bid to remain FIFA president.
The move comes after a loss of confidence in the FIFA president following his abandoned proposal to sell equity in FIFA competitions to private investment firms.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) confirmed it is withdrawing backing for Mr Gianni Infantino’s candidacy for re-election as FIFA president for the 2027–2031 term.
The lucrative plan prompted worldwide backlash, with UEFA threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the World Cup.
After Infantino scrapped the proposal, both UEFA and Concacaf — which governs football in North, Central America and the Caribbean — issued statements on Saturday criticising the leadership of the world governing body.
Wales is among the earliest nations to publicly oppose Infantino’s candidacy.
The FAW said recent failings in governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communication and judgement mean it no longer has confidence in Infantino to lead global football.
It added that not putting the best interests of the sport first is unacceptable.
