England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman has reassured that the team’s safety is continuously monitored as the Lionesses gear up for their match against Ukraine in Turkey.
The European champions will kick off their qualifying campaign for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 on Tuesday, facing Ukraine at a neutral venue in Antalya due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Recent escalations in the Middle East have raised concerns regarding England’s safety during their stay in Turkey, but Wiegman emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored.
“We have received reassurances and maintain close communication with the Government and local authorities,” Wiegman stated during the pre-match press conference. “Our security team is in regular contact with them. We feel secure here, but we’re vigilant and maintain constant communication with responsible authorities.”
Reflecting on the current situation in Ukraine, Wiegman expressed her sadness and hope that football can foster some unity.
“We cannot ignore what’s happening, as it’s truly heartbreaking. While we have excellent facilities and favorable conditions here for our preparations, the reason we’re here isn’t pleasant,” she commented.
“We wish for Ukraine to be able to play at home, which adds to the sadness of the situation. They’ve faced significant challenges just to be here, and the circumstances they endure back home are quite tragic.”
“We hope this match can serve as a unifying force and allow Ukraine to showcase their talent to the world in a different light. Hopefully, football can bring some joy.”
As England returns to competitive play for the first time since their UEFA Women’s EURO victory over Spain last summer, Wiegman expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming qualification phase for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“I’m excited that competitive football is back and am looking forward to it. The World Cup qualification journey begins now, and we’re eager to dive in.”
The match between England and Ukraine is set to commence at 5 PM on Tuesday evening.
