Newcastle United fans will soon vote on a redesigned club crest, marking the first badge change since 1988.
While the current emblem is well liked, the club says its intricate, irregular details don’t translate well across modern uses, making consistent, high-quality reproduction difficult on digital platforms, broadcasts, and merchandise.
The idea to refresh the crest was first aired publicly in May 2025. Since then, the club has consulted its fan advisory board and surveyed 19,500 members and season-ticket holders, using their feedback to shape the designs that will appear on the ballot.
Eighty-four percent of respondents said they prefer a design that respects the club’s heritage rather than a complete overhaul. Supporters also identified key elements they want retained, including the castle, the seahorses, the black-and-white shield, and the ribbon.
Eligible voters—season-ticket holders, members, and anyone who bought tickets for two or more women’s home matches last season—will choose their preferred option during a two-week voting window in August.
Reactions are mixed. Some, like Ian, would like a “none of the above” choice, while others, such as Matt, feel the decision to change is inevitable and worry about a trend toward simplified, generic crests that lose meaning. On the other hand, Phil feels the club is listening to fans rather than pushing a corporate-style badge, and Andy, who loves the current emblem, accepts that change is part of keeping up with modern demands and believes the process appears respectful.
