EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — On a sweltering Saturday night at MetLife Stadium, Brazil and Morocco ended in a lively 1-1 stalemate during the initial match of Group C play.
Morocco’s Atlas Lions started strong, controlling the ball in the opening 15 minutes and appearing to be the dominant team. Their efforts paid off in the 21st minute when forward Ismael Saibari skillfully chipped a ball over Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker, putting Morocco ahead.
In response, Brazil leveled the score with a quick goal, somewhat against the tide of play, thanks to an impressive individual effort by Vinícius Júnior. The Real Madrid star received a pass inside the box, made a clever cut, and fired a shot past Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, leveling the score at 1-1.
At halftime, Brazil had a slight edge in possession (54%), yet Morocco was ahead in expected goals (1.22 to Brazil’s 0.85).
In the second half, Brazil improved their performance, controlling much of the gameplay and creating more scoring opportunities. Despite 10 minutes of added time, the match ultimately concluded in a tie. Both teams are likely to progress to the knockout stage.
Brazil’s next clash is against Haiti in Group C on Friday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Morocco will face Scotland at 6 p.m. ET on Friday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
