Torquay United’s manager, Paul Wotton, has labeled his team’s 5-0 home defeat against Chelmsford City as “unacceptable.”
This defeat marks their third consecutive loss and fourth without a victory in five matches, causing Wotton’s injury-plagued squad to drop to fourth place in the National League South.
They now find themselves 10 points behind the league leaders, Dorking Wanderers, having previously held a three-point advantage after winning against Dover Athletic 25 days ago.
The Gulls, missing key players like Sam Dreyer, Callum Dolan, and Jordan Young, suffered additional injury concerns when striker Cody Cooke dislocated his shoulder just before halftime.
At that point, they were already trailing 2-0 following a stunning strike from Charlee Adams in the seventh minute and a goal from Jett Murphy shortly before the break.
Wotton responded by making a triple substitution during halftime, and early in the second half, Jordan Young, Kieran Wilson, Matt Jay, and Louis Dennis all came close to scoring.
However, Aaron Taylor extended Chelmsford’s lead to 3-0 in the 62nd minute, before Harry Barbrook and Ben Tompkins added two more goals in the closing minutes, pushing Chelmsford up to ninth place in the standings.
“A 5-0 defeat at home is simply not acceptable,” Wotton stated in an interview with BBC Radio Devon.
“I was extremely disappointed with our first half – they’ve scored a phenomenal goal, and the second goal was particularly poor on our part. The astonishing thing is that at the start of the second half, we came out really strongly and created two or three solid chances, but the third goal was the final blow.
“This has been an absolutely terrible month; it’s been grim, but I refuse to wallow in self-pity or lament over injuries and such. We’ve lost 5-0 at home, and there’s no escaping that reality.”
