Wrexhams Club Captain…

Club captain James McClean has departed from Championship side Wrexham to join Derry City.

Despite having a contract with Wrexham until the summer of 2027, McClean has made the decision to return to his hometown club in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

The 36-year-old former Republic of Ireland winger made over 100 appearances for Wrexham, netting eight goals during his time at the club.

“Jimmy had a chance to return to Ireland, and I had a good conversation with him last week,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

“The timing is right for him and his family. He has always dreamed of settling back in his hometown and now he has the opportunity to conclude his career there.

“He has been a fantastic player for us and I’ve genuinely enjoyed working with him.

“His drive, determination, mentality, and professionalism have made him a key player over the past few years, and we wish him and his family all the best.”

Before Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat to Norwich City, the club’s CEO Mike Williamson confirmed that McClean, who played a vital role in securing two promotions for the club, was on his way out.

“We have always supported our players in pursuing their goals and dreams,” Williamson told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

“This approach comes directly from Rob [Mac] and Ryan [Reynolds], demonstrating our commitment to players who may not fit into the future plans but deserve support in their personal aspirations.

“It’s the same situation with Jimmy.”
