Xabi Alonso’s Remarks…

Liverpool rarely re-sign former players.

Ian Rush remains the most notable instance, having returned to the club after his stint at Juventus.

He went on to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Steve Staunton also made a return after leaving in 1991, returning seven years later for two additional seasons at Anfield.

In more recent years, Robbie Fowler returned from Manchester City under Rafa Benitez, and Craig Bellamy came back on a free transfer after his season with Cardiff City in the Premier League.

Throughout the club’s history, there have only been four such cases. However, it’s likely we’ll see more players return to Anfield in the future.

This includes one player whom Xabi Alonso has expressed admiration for in recent remarks.

Interestingly, Alonso was once a potential candidate for a return to Anfield. Had circumstances been different, he might have been managing Liverpool instead of Arne Slot.

Alonso was among the frontrunners to take over from Jurgen Klopp when the German announced his departure.

In the end, Alonso opted for a move to Real Madrid, a decision that demonstrated his status as one of the brightest young managers in global football.

Having collaborated with some of the game’s greatest minds and played alongside many legendary players, Alonso possesses a keen eye for talent and understands what it takes to reach the highest echelons of the sport.

When it was revealed that Alonso is a big admirer of a Liverpool academy graduate, my interest piqued—though it’s not Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It’s actually Tyler Morton.

In a recent interview, the former Liverpool midfielder, who joined Lyon this summer, disclosed that he was close to a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2024.

“He (Alonso) expressed how much he values me as a player,” Morton told SportsBible in an exclusive interview. “They wanted to sign me.”

Ultimately, Liverpool decided against letting Morton leave, as Slot wanted to keep him as a backup option.

This summer, however, he secured a much-anticipated transfer, which has yielded fantastic results for the young man. Morton has been thriving at Lyon and has already made a name for himself as one of Ligue 1’s top midfielders.

His ability to dominate matches indicates that he is a rare talent, and Alonso’s high praise only reinforces the potential many see in him.

Such recognition from Alonso suggests that Morton is destined for greatness. It seems highly likely that he will eventually find his way back to Liverpool, echoing the returns of past legends such as Rush, Staunton, Fowler, and Bellamy.
