Barcelona’s Tactics Under…

In recent weeks, there has been considerable discussion surrounding Barcelona and their tactics, particularly following the 3-3 draw against Club Brugge. This match marked the team’s 20th goal conceded in just 15 matches across all competitions this season, raising significant concerns for the Catalan club.

Criticism has particularly focused on Hansi Flick’s insistence on maintaining a very high defensive line, which left Barcelona exposed multiple times during the game in Brugge. Former player Thierry Henry voiced his disapproval of Flick’s tactics after the loss to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the season, and now another football icon has joined the chorus.

During an appearance on beIN Sports (as reported by Sport), Dutch legend Ruud Gullit offered a scathing critique of Flick’s strategy, asserting that Barcelona’s chances of success this season hinge on making major changes.

“Why cling to a plan that is destined to fail? Every turnover creates an opportunity for a counterattack. You can’t achieve titles playing in this manner,” he stated.

Is the Criticism of the High Line Valid?

There has been much debate regarding Barcelona’s commitment to executing a high defensive line. Last season, this tactic proved effective and contributed to their domestic treble, comprising La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup titles. However, they have since lost Inigo Martinez, who played a crucial role in organizing the defense, and a viable replacement has yet to emerge.

With the season still in its early stages, Barcelona has the opportunity to rectify their issues, especially with the final international break of 2025 approaching after this weekend. Flick has already indicated that he has no plans to alter his strategy. It appears that the high press may be a contributing factor to the Catalans’ struggles thus far this season, suggesting that adjustments will be crucial in the weeks ahead.
