Chelseas Jesse Derry…

Teenage Chelsea player Chelsea prospect Jesse Derry is “conscious and speaking” following a concerning incident during his first senior start, where he was stretchered off and hospitalized after colliding with Nottingham Forest defender Zach Abbott.

The 18-year-old shone in the match and was pivotal in trying to turn around Chelsea’s fortunes after they fell behind 2-0. However, his debut took a turn for the worst when he and Abbott both jumped for a ball in the penalty area just before half-time, resulting in a head collision that Derry narrowly won, earning Chelsea a penalty.

Prioritizing the players’ health, both teams halted the game as Derry’s well-being became the main concern. He received immediate medical aid on the pitch before being transported to the hospital.

Later, Chelsea issued a statement confirming, “Jesse is conscious, communicating, and undergoing precautionary evaluations. We wish him a swift recovery and appreciate the medical staff for their rapid response.”

As soon as the incident occurred, Derry’s teammates gestured for a substitution, and referee Anthony Taylor promptly called for medical assistance for both players.

Meanwhile, Abbott seemed shaken but managed to walk off without help, as Forest made a concussion substitution, replacing the 19-year-old with Neco Williams.

Derry remained on the field for an extended period, receiving oxygen amid an eight-and-a-half-minute delay. The Stamford Bridge crowd applauded him as he was wheeled off on a stretcher and transported to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for precautionary checks.

Derry was replaced by Liam Delap. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Matz Sels managed to make a fingertip save after Derry’s penalty kick attempt by Cole Palmer, leaving Chelsea still trailing 2-0 at half-time.

Concern arose again early in the second half when Forest’s substitute Morgan Gibbs-White collided heads with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez during a contested ball in the Blues’ box.

Though Gibbs-White suffered more severe consequences from the clash, both players managed to exit the field under their own power after receiving significant bandaging to their heads. Sanchez was replaced by Filip Jorgensen, while Chris Wood substituted for Gibbs-White, putting his participation in Forest’s upcoming Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa on Thursday in doubt.

Taiwo Awoniyi opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, followed by a penalty by Igor Jesus after a foul by Malo Gusto on Awoniyi. Awoniyi scored again in the 52nd minute, with Joao Pedro capped off with a consolation goal via an overhead kick during stoppage time.
