Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe addressed the media ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against West Ham at St James’ Park (kick-off at 17:30 BST).

Here are the highlights from his press conference:

  • Lewis Hall has been training all week and is available, but Joelinton is a doubt due to a “slight thigh issue.” He will be reevaluated prior to Sunday’s match.

  • Howe mentioned that Fabian Schar is unlikely to return this season, calling it “a real shame.” On Schar’s expiring contract this summer, Howe added: “He still has a lot to offer on the pitch. His quality remains, but it has been a tough season for him. Discussions with him and his representatives are planned for next week.”

  • He characterized the final home game of the season as “massive” and “crucially important” as they strive to finish the season positively.

  • On building momentum for a strong finish, he said: “We are moving in the right direction. We need to generate confidence and momentum in our game. The players will carry the results of this match and the next into the summer.”

  • He emphasized that they are “not just going through the motions” and are considering past performances, while also keeping an eye on the upcoming season.

  • Regarding the future, he noted: “At this time of the season, there is always consideration for what lies ahead. We are entering a transfer window full of uncertainties. I anticipate changes this summer. We must offer players opportunities and explore options for the future concerning next season.”

  • Howe stated he had “no updates” regarding Anthony Gordon‘s rumored move to Bayern Munich, but acknowledged the reasoning behind his lack of appearances since returning from injury: “He just came back, and the team has performed well without him. However, it is also with a view for the future.”

  • He stated that they are “currently not” looking for a striker in the summer transfer window but noted “there is still work to be done” to enhance that position. He concluded, “We need to pull everything together and ensure it functions effectively.”

  • On clubs such as West Ham and Tottenham being in relegation contention: “This year’s Premier League has been remarkably unpredictable. Established teams with significant histories have found themselves struggling while smaller clubs have thrived. This is due to multiple factors and is a positive aspect of the Premier League.”

  • He emphasized that “the challenge is present for all clubs” and that “continuous improvement and adaptation are necessary to stay competitive” to avoid being relegated.
