Connor Roberts, defender for Wales and Burnley, reflects on how the challenges of his “draining” year spent sidelined by injury have made him value his career achievements even more.
The right-back did not play in the entirety of the 2025-26 season due to an Achilles injury.

He made a long-awaited comeback as a substitute during Wales’ 2-1 defeat to Romania, marking 362 days since his last appearance for club or country against Belgium in June 2025.
During his extended time off the pitch, Roberts witnessed Burnley suffer relegation from the Premier League, while Wales also fell short in their attempt to qualify for the World Cup.
The 30-year-old, who has played for his nation in two major tournaments, described the experience as mentally taxing.
“It’s been incredibly tough,” he shared. “This was my first significant long-term injury, so I’ve been fortunate to have avoided it until now. Watching my club struggle and my country miss out on qualification has been emotionally exhausting and very challenging.”
“But now that I’m back, I believe I will treasure my accomplishments even more—the things I’ve achieved, the milestones I never thought I would reach, and the opportunities ahead as I continue my journey until retirement.”
Roberts was called upon by head coach Craig Bellamy in the 60th minute of Wales’ match against Romania.
Fellow substitute David Brooks quickly equalized, scoring just three minutes after entering the field, leveling the score against Florinel Coman‘s opener at Stadionul Steaua.

However, Adrian Rus scored the winning goal in the 80th minute, leading the yellow-clad team to their first victory since Gheorghe Hagi took charge in April.
This defeat means that Wales remains winless in their last four matches of 2026, further extending their away friendly winless streak to 17 games, a run dating back to November 2008.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Roberts was thrilled to be back on the pitch for his national team.
“It feels fantastic to be back on the field,” said the Burnley defender. “Some people are pleased to see me return, while others may not be, but I am back and look forward to staying fit over the summer to prepare for the next season with both club and country.”
