Liverpool is expected to revamp their attacking lineup in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Reds are facing a setback with Hugo Ekitike sidelined with a long-term injury, with the £69m French player not set to return until 2027. This situation has left the outgoing Premier League champions relying heavily on Alexander Isak, who has had an inconsistent fitness record since his arrival.

Isak, purchased for £125m from Newcastle last summer, has managed only four goals due to an injury-prone first year. With multiple setbacks, including a broken leg, he has yet to solidify his place as Liverpool’s consistent No. 9.
Depending solely on the 26-year-old is a risk, especially as most of Richard Hughes’ transfer budget might be allocated to other areas this summer. There’s also a pressing need for a one-on-one specialist on the wing and a new right-back. Given these budget constraints, exploring a “low-cost” option for the attacking front could be essential for the Reds.
Darwin Nunez emerges as the perfect ‘low-cost’ No. 9
In this context, Darwin Nunez is a strong candidate who could be on the horizon.

The Uruguayan, 26, reportedly seeks a return to Anfield as per a report from Mundo Deportivo. He is set to be released from his contract with Al-Hilal, which he signed last summer in a deal worth £46m.
However, after being removed from Al-Hilal’s domestic squad, Nunez is eager to make a return to Europe this summer.
Liverpool is actively pursuing his signature, according to reports; however, they face competition from Newcastle and Chelsea for a deal involving their former cult hero.
Additionally, Barcelona might also be a contender since they are set to lose their No. 9, Robert Lewandowski.

Nunez eager for a Liverpool comeback
“The Uruguayan, who has experience in Spanish football, albeit only at the Second Division level with Almería, is attracting interest from the Premier League,” the report states.
“Newcastle is actively searching for a striker for next season, and despite German forward Nick Woltemade, who was acquired for €75 million, has only scored 11 goals, falling short of expectations.
“Darwin Núñez is keen to return to Liverpool, where he scored 25 goals in his three seasons in the English league. Chelsea is also in the mix for his services. With Xabi Alonso’s arrival, a return to the Premier League seems increasingly possible.”

Nunez could very well be the ideal addition this summer. Fans appreciated his work rate, even though his scoring frequency declined in later seasons.
The former Benfica striker is under a substantial contract in Saudi Arabia, reportedly earning around £400k a week, and it’s unlikely he will receive a similar wage upon returning to the Premier League.
Nonetheless, Liverpool holds a significant advantage, as the eager South American is desperate for another opportunity at Anfield.
