Alan Banks, celebrated as one of the all-time greats of Exeter City football, has passed away at the age of 87.
He was the inaugural player to net 100 league goals for the club, amassing a total of 258 appearances for the Grecians across two distinct periods.

Banks, a forward originally from Liverpool, began his professional journey at his local club before transferring to Cambridge City in 1961.
He joined Exeter in 1964 and made a significant impact, scoring 18 goals in his debut season to help the Grecians achieve fourth place in Division Four and secure the club’s first promotion.
Overall, he scored 43 goals in 86 appearances before moving to local rivals Plymouth Argyle in 1966 following City’s relegation.
Just over a year later, he returned to St James Park, and during the next six seasons, he finished as the club’s top scorer three times. He notably scored the opening goal in a 3-1 FA Cup defeat against a formidable Manchester United team featuring legends like George Best, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, and Nobby Stiles.

Banks set the club’s goalscoring record in February 1971 and eventually departed for Poole Town in 1973, having registered 101 league goals along with an additional eight in domestic cup competitions.
He remains Exeter City’s second-highest all-time goalscorer, with only Tony Kellow surpassing his tally.
Following his playing career, Banks continued to reside in Exeter, regularly attending matches at St James Park for many years.
“Everyone at Exeter City extends their heartfelt condolences to Alan’s family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him,” stated a club statement.
“Alan will be greatly missed, but his legacy will endure for future generations.
“The club will honor Alan with a dedicated match during the upcoming season and is also planning a lasting tribute to celebrate one of the finest players in Exeter City history.”
