Manchester City midfielder Rodri has successfully undergone back surgery, as confirmed by the club, although the length of his absence is still uncertain.
The Spain international will now begin a brief rehabilitation period following the procedure.
Rodri, who was awarded the 2024 Ballon d’Or, has been dealing with ongoing back issues, which led to what the club termed a “minor” surgery.
This latest health setback adds to the challenges he has faced since suffering a serious knee injury nearly two years ago.
In an official statement, Manchester City announced: “Rodri has successfully undergone minor back surgery. The midfielder had been experiencing discomfort for a while and has now had a procedure to rectify the issue. He will commence a short rehabilitation period.”

This news arrives amid increased speculation about Rodri’s future with the club.
The former Atletico Madrid player, who has just a year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, has been linked with a possible transfer to Real Madrid, with rumors gaining traction following his World Cup recognition.
New manager Enzo Maresca commented on the situation last week, expressing he was “not worried” about the midfielder’s prospects.
“He needs to recover, and then he will be back here with us,” said the Italian manager before Rodri’s surgery.
In contrast, there is clarity regarding defender Josko Gvardiol, who signed a new five-year contract with City on Tuesday.
Gvardiol, who transferred to City from RB Leipzig in 2023, was named Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season.
Despite interest from Real Madrid, he stated, “As soon as City expressed a desire to renew my contract, I knew that was what I wanted.”
He joins Abdukodir Khusanov in signing a new contract this summer, as City seeks to strengthen their defense following the exits of John Stones and Nathan Ake.
Gvardiol is now anticipated to compete for a starting position at City against Khusanov and Marc Guehi next season.
