For the 14th consecutive season, Newport County is gearing up for another League Two campaign.
After a dramatic escape from relegation thanks to a 2-1 victory at Barrow on the final day of last season, the club looked set for stability under the stewardship of Premier League winner Christian Fuchs. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Fuchs resigned just two days before the squad was due to report for training, leaving the team in need of new leadership.
Former Fulham U21 manager Hayden Mullins has been appointed as Fuchs’ successor, with hopes of steering the club away from yet another relegation battle.
The Exiles kick off their season by welcoming Rochdale to Rodney Parade on Saturday, August 15 (12:30 BST).

Supporters of the Exiles have reason for optimism following the team’s performance in their first competitive outing. Mullins’ squad came close to pulling off an upset against League One opponents AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, ultimately losing 5-4 in a penalty shootout after conceding a late equalizer.
Post-match, Mullins reflected on the game, stating, “While the initial feeling was like a defeat, there were so many positives to take away after reviewing it. We understand the challenge ahead in the league, but we pushed a quality League One side to their limits.”
New signings are also beginning to make an impact. Bamba scored a stunning long-range goal against Wimbledon, while Bournemouth loanee Alfie Merritt received acclaim for his display against Serie A giants Roma. Mullins emphasized the need for patience as Merritt adapts to his new surroundings while striving for success.
“We see great potential in Alfie, but he’s young, and we’ll need to support his development,” Mullins said. “He understands the stakes, and we expect him to be ready for Saturday if called upon.”
Mullins has not ruled out further signings, noting, “We’re exploring options, but the competition for players is fierce. We must be astute in our recruitment strategy to secure the right targets.”
Home Challenges Ahead

The first challenge for Newport comes against newly promoted Rochdale, a team that finished second in the National League last season with 106 points before securing promotion via the play-offs. To avoid another fight against relegation, the Exiles must improve on their dismal home record from last season, where they only managed five league victories.
Mullins aims to make Rodney Parade a fortress for their opponents, saying, “We’ve discussed how we want to approach this season and how we can challenge teams visiting us. It must be a tough game for them every time they come here.”
As they look to turn their home form around, the Exiles are determined to do better than the opening match of last season, which ended in a draw against Notts County. The new manager is eager for his first competitive match at home and has called on the Newport supporters to rally behind the team.
“I’m excited to get started,” Mullins said. “My focus is to deliver results for the fans at home—it would mean so much. We need their support to help lift the players to secure all three points. I’m sure we’ll provide plenty for them to enjoy on the pitch.”

This year, Newport aims for greater stability after a tumultuous previous season. Chairman Huw Jenkins seeks to avoid a repeat of last year’s gamble on ex-Manchester United development coach Dave Hughes, who was dismissed after just 16 games with the team sitting at the bottom of League Two.
Jenkins has placed his trust in Mullins, who expresses confidence in fitting into the club’s future plans. “I had a good conversation with Huw about his vision for the club and where we’re headed. It feels like the right fit at the right time,” Mullins remarked.
So, just how far can Newport County go under Mullins’ leadership? “We aim to push as far as possible. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that is positive,” he noted. “We’re working to strengthen Newport and aim to perform effectively every week. If we maintain that positivity, I believe we can position ourselves in the top half of the table.”
