Joan Laporta, the president of FC Barcelona, publicly backed young talent Lamine Yamal just hours ahead of the team’s fourth UEFA Champions League match against Club Brugge in Belgium.
The 18-year-old prospect has faced mounting scrutiny following remarks aimed at Real Madrid in the lead-up to last month’s Clasico, alongside concerns regarding his off-field lifestyle.
Additionally, Yamal is also grappling with pubic discomfort, which has hindered his performance in recent matches.
Laporta Supports Yamal
In light of the circumstances, President Laporta reiterated his unwavering support for the young star.
Addressing the media at Bruges City Hall before the match against Club Brugge, he stated:
“Lamine is a genius. I fully support him and will stand by him. He is an incredible lad and an exceptional player. Barcelona has been fortunate to nurture talents like him throughout its history.”
Laporta underscored the need for careful management of Yamal’s situation, especially as he continues to deal with pubalgia.
“We must protect him; at just 18 years old, it’s challenging for him to navigate everything that is happening,” Laporta remarked.

“He is managing it well; he’s a good kid, and we must be sympathetic towards him. Groin injuries take time to heal. He is putting in the effort, much like other injured players.”
On the Team
Laporta also used the opportunity to praise the hard work of the team’s injured players, particularly mentioning Gavi:
“You see Gavi every day, both morning and evening, diligently rehabilitating his knee. I value his commitment, as I do Lamine’s, who balances this with match play. Flick regards him as crucial, and we are always supporting him.”
The Barça president dismissed any recent rumors regarding manager Hansi Flick’s discontent, asserting:
“Hansi is very content at Barça and looks forward to being back in a stadium filled with 105,000 supporters.”
Regarding the Champions League clash with Club Brugge, Laporta praised the Belgian team while emphasizing Barça’s objectives:
“They’re a competitive team in the Champions League, backed by passionate fans, and it promises to be an exciting match. We aim to secure three vital points, potentially placing us in third or fourth position.”
In conclusion, Laporta expressed confidence in the team’s progress, despite the current injury crisis.
“We are on the right path, improving consistently. In the match against Elche, all three forwards scored, and we’re pleased with our development. While injuries have upset our plans, they are a reality we have to accept,” he concluded.
