Liverpool has announced that head coach Arne Slot will depart from the club immediately.
The Dutchman guided the Reds to a Premier League title in his inaugural season at the helm in 2024-25, but he struggled to replicate that success this year, finishing in fifth place.
Despite a challenging season marked by a nine-loss stretch in 12 games across all competitions, Liverpool’s management supported Slot. However, sources informed ESPN that a change was deemed necessary as the summer approaches.
Slot’s playing style has faced criticism for being too cautious this term, and the club is now looking for a more offensive and dynamic approach. The decision to part ways with Slot was not made lightly, as management acknowledges his success since taking over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2024.
Media reports suggest that a managerial change is viewed as the best route for Liverpool to achieve future success, with a search for his successor already in progress.
One potential candidate is Andoni Iraola, who is set to leave AFC Bournemouth when his contract expires this summer. He led Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish in the Champions League.
Last season, Liverpool’s performance declined, finishing with just 60 points—their lowest tally in a decade—and suffering 19 losses in all competitions. Slot’s tenure was complicated by injuries to crucial players like the £125 million Alexander Isak and the difficult aftermath of striker Diogo Jota’s passing last July. In a joint statement released Saturday, Liverpool’s ownership remarked, “This decision was difficult but necessary for the club’s future.”
“Arne’s contributions to Liverpool FC during his time here have been significant, meaningful, and successful, especially in the eyes of supporters,” they added. “However, we have collectively concluded that change is essential for the club’s progression.”
They concluded with well wishes for Slot’s future endeavors in coaching, emphasizing that his legacy at Liverpool remains intact and will gain significance over the years. “This conclusion reflects our belief that the team’s direction requires a new approach. This does not diminish the respect we hold for Arne or his capabilities; rather, it highlights our need for a different strategy.”
Slot took the reins at Liverpool in May 2024, signing a three-year deal following a successful period with Dutch club Feyenoord.
