Carrick confirms New…

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is optimistic that Kobbie Mainoo will sign a new contract to remain at Old Trafford.

Mainoo has been engaged in discussions regarding a contract extension that is expected to last until 2031, which will include a substantial salary increase from his current deal signed in 2023, as he began his ascent into the senior team.

“We’re getting closer, so we have a positive outlook,” Carrick stated.

“Only time will reveal how it unfolds, but we are calm about it, and right now, we’re in a good spot,” he added before facing Leeds United on Monday.

This news will likely be met with enthusiasm by Manchester United supporters, especially considering that during their last encounter with Leeds on January 4, it seemed unlikely Mainoo would remain with the club.

At that time, the midfielder had not yet started a Premier League match this season under Ruben Amorim’s management. However, the 1-1 draw at Elland Road marked a turning point, as it was Amorim’s final game in charge.

Though Mainoo was sidelined due to a calf injury back then, he had been exploring options during the winter transfer window after a loan request to Napoli was denied last summer.

In the post-match press conference following the Leeds match, Amorim made harsh criticisms of the club’s management, which led to his dismissal within 24 hours.

Carrick, along with Wayne Rooney and their families, was watching that match while on vacation in Barbados, unaware of the significant changes that would soon unfold in his career.

“At that point, there were no signs of what was coming,” he reflected. “I was just enjoying time with my family from a distance.”

“The nature of the game is that it can shift quickly. One moment you’re in, and the next you’re out. Player form and fitness can dramatically change situations.”

Despite having achieved seven wins and only one defeat in his ten games at the helm, Carrick remains grounded.

His leadership has propelled Manchester United to third place in the league, requiring only four wins and a draw from their final seven matches to secure Champions League qualification.

Still, many fans argue that failing to reach this goal would be a disappointment, given the team’s current strong position.

Carrick, known for his measured approach, refrained from making sensational comments. However, he recognizes the complexity of expectations.

“That’s a strong word,” he remarked when asked about the possibility of failure. He clarified, “I wouldn’t accept that notion,” when it was suggested that finishing sixth would be considered acceptable given past rejections.

Carrick prefers to focus on long-term goals, aligning them with his aspirations when he played for the club.

He acknowledges that, after finishing 15th last season, progress cannot be made in a single leap.

“As a club, we aim to compete at the highest level,” he noted. “But we must also be realistic about our journey from where we started to where we are now, and continue building from there.”

Securing a place in the Champions League would represent a significant milestone, both financially and in terms of prestige.

“It’s clear to everyone that finishing in certain league positions has financial implications,” he explained. “The Champions League offers numerous benefits. It’s where we aspire to be, and it affects many aspects: from player retention to new signings.”

“We need to adapt to maintaining our presence in that competition consistently.”
