Larne, the champions of the Irish Premiership, have finalized the acquisition of 24-year-old defender Sam McClelland.
McClelland joins the squad at Inver Park after spending four years in England and Scotland.
He began his journey with Chelsea after transferring from Coleraine’s academy in 2018, and had a loan stint with Barrow in the EFL during the 2022-23 season.
After his time with Barrow, McClelland moved to St Johnstone in 2023, where he enjoyed a productive loan spell at Dundee United, contributing to their Scottish Championship title win.
Internationally, McClelland has represented his country at various youth levels, amassing 10 appearances for the under-21 team before making his senior debut against Ukraine in a friendly match in June 2021.
After a year out due to a ruptured Achilles injury, he has regained his fitness just in time to enhance the east Antrim club’s lineup for their upcoming European and domestic competitions.
“Sam is a player I’ve always admired. He has been forecasted for great success from a young age,” commented Larne manager Gary Haveron.
“Unfortunately, he suffered a significant injury and perhaps was a bit too courageous, trying to play through it when he should have been sidelined.
“He’s now fully fit and passed his medical with ease. I’m very eager to see him in a Larne jersey because I believe he has the potential to become one of the top centre-backs in the Irish League.”
“Sam is eager to progress. He will add presence, leadership, and composure on the ball to our team, so we’re thrilled to welcome him aboard.”
