Ousmane Dembélé, forward for Paris Saint-Germain, has clinched the Ligue 1 Player of the Season award for the second consecutive year.
Dembélé received the accolade late on Monday, marking the 10th straight year that a PSG player has won the title. Kylian Mbappé previously won five times in a row before making his transfer to Real Madrid.
The last player not from PSG to win the award was Alexandre Lacazette, who took home the honor while playing for Lyon back in 2015. The award was not given out during the pandemic-affected 2019-20 season.
Dembélé was instrumental in PSG’s league title triumph last season, netting 21 goals and subsequently winning the Ballon d’Or. However, his impact this season has been limited due to injuries, as he has scored 10 goals and started only nine league matches under coach Luis Enrique.
Despite a quieter domestic season, Dembélé’s performances have shone in the Champions League, where PSG is seeking a second consecutive title. His early goal in the return leg against Bayern Munich helped secure a 1-1 draw, sending PSG through with a 6-5 aggregate score.
PSG will compete against Premier League leaders Arsenal in the final scheduled for May 30.
In other news, Dembélé’s teammate at PSG, Désiré Doué, has also been recognized, winning the league’s Best Young Player award for the second straight season. The 20-year-old forward’s decisive goal against Brest on Sunday has put PSG within reach of a record-extending 14th league title.
PSG currently sits six points clear of second-place Lens, with just two matches remaining and a significantly better goal difference. A draw against Lens on Wednesday in their rescheduled match will secure the title for PSG.
Pierre Sage has been named Coach of the Year for leading Lens to a surprising title challenge in his first season with limited resources compared to PSG. Additionally, Robin Risser has been recognized as the Best Goalkeeper for his contributions at Lens.
The Best Women’s Player award went to Haitian playmaker Melchie Dumornay of OL Lyonnes, who are currently aiming for a quadruple this season.
