Sources have indicated to ESPN that Eddie Howe is preparing to depart as head coach of Newcastle, marking the conclusion of his five-year tenure.
Howe’s departure is imminent, occurring just 25 days before Newcastle’s opening match of the new Premier League season against Liverpool at St James’ Park on August 23.

Multiple reports suggest that Matthias Jaissle, currently managing Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, is poised to take over as Howe’s successor.
Howe, 48, oversaw Newcastle’s first three preseason fixtures this summer, which included a victory against Darlington, a draw against Gateshead, and a recent loss to Bristol City.
He is not the only notable exit from St James’ Park this summer, as Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have joined Barcelona and Tottenham, respectively.
Additionally, there’s speculation surrounding Bruno Guimarães, who is being linked with a possible move to Arsenal.
During Howe’s time at the helm, Newcastle finally secured a trophy by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025, marking their first major title since 1955. Under his guidance, the Magpies also qualified for the Champions League twice.
However, the previous season fell short of expectations, with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League.
Howe boasts a 46.9% win rate in the Premier League, winning 84 out of 179 matches. This stat stands second only to Kevin Keegan’s 51.2% win rate among Newcastle managers.
He was appointed in November 2021, taking over from Steve Bruce amidst a relegation battle that found the team in 19th place.
His arrival coincided with Newcastle’s acquisition by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Howe successfully guided Newcastle to safety in his first season and led the team to Champions League qualification a year later.
