Fabrizio Romano confirms…

Liverpool has achieved the contract renewal it was seeking.

Dominik Szoboszlai—whose initial agreement was set to expire in 2028—has finalized a contract extension.

The Hungarian captain will be at Anfield until 2031, providing a significant boost for departing sporting director Richard Hughes.

Szoboszlai, who joined the Reds for £60m in 2023, had been engaged in negotiations for several months regarding a new deal.

According to reports, official confirmation is forthcoming, allowing new head coach Andoni Iraola to focus on long-term planning with Szoboszlai in mind.

Romano Confirms Szoboszlai Among Liverpool’s Top Earners

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Szoboszlai’s new contract will place him among Liverpool’s highest-paid players. Previously, his contract was estimated at around £150k per week.

Certain teammates, including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, were earning approximately £400k weekly on their last contracts.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have signed renewals worth £277k per week and £250k per week, respectively.

Given his contributions over the past two seasons, including a Premier League title, it’s unlikely the former RB Leipzig midfielder would settle for a lower rate.

Earlier, a Hungarian source reported that he aimed for £300k per week during negotiations, which aligns with Romano’s projection of him becoming one of the squad’s top earners.

Liverpool and Szoboszlai Finalize New Five-Year Agreement

Liverpool trimmed their wage bill over the summer, parting ways with high earners like Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate. This allowed Richard Hughes to meet Szoboszlai’s substantial demands.

“It’s a five-year deal for Dominik Szoboszlai, positioning him as one of the best-paid players in the Liverpool team. This is a significant contract with an important salary.”

“I believe this is fantastic news for Liverpool. Szoboszlai has excelled during a challenging season for many of the players here.”

“While it has been a tough season for several top players, Szoboszlai has consistently performed at an exceptional level and demonstrated strong leadership and commitment.”

Liverpool Mitigates Szoboszlai Transfer Concerns

Romano further notes that the Liverpool sporting director acted quickly to secure the renewal just in time.

If the negotiations had dragged on longer—similar to the situation with Konate—Liverpool might have faced potential offers for Szoboszlai as early as next summer.

“If Liverpool did not extend the contract, then in a few weeks or months, he would have become a top target for elite clubs,” he explained.

“There were already inquiries from clubs trying to gauge whether he would sign a new contract or not. Thus, Liverpool made a wise move by finalizing Szoboszlai’s renewal.”

“If you’ve been following my updates, this isn’t surprising, as I’ve been mentioning for months that he was keen on a new agreement and that Liverpool was making progress. Now it’s official—Dominik Szoboszlai is committed to Liverpool with his new deal.”
