Matthew Fitzpatrick netted a hat-trick as Linfield secured a convincing 3-1 win against Dungannon Swifts in the Irish Premiership’s European play-off final.
The star striker increased his season tally to 24 goals, helping the Blues clinch a spot in the first qualifying round of the upcoming Uefa Conference League.

Linfield outplayed the Irish Cup runners-up Dungannon, who struggled to cope with their third play-off match in just a week.
This victory allowed Linfield to add the newly introduced Ulster Cup trophy – designated for the play-off winners this season – to the League Cup they claimed during the regular campaign.
Fitzpatrick Shines as Hat-Trick Hero for the Blues
The match began quietly, with Linfield getting the first opportunity. A cross from Adam Frizzell found Kirk Millar at the back post, but his header lacked power and failed to threaten goalkeeper Declan Dunne.

Dungannon almost struck first, as Corey Smith’s effort from the left hit the outside of the post, even though keeper Chris Johns had it under control.
Linfield opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Kyle McClean sent Frizzell racing down the left, whose low cross was slotted home by an onrushing Fitzpatrick.
The hosts nearly doubled their lead in the opening 20 minutes when Isaac Baird dispossessed Gael Bigirimana and set up Fitzpatrick, but Dunne made a crucial save to deny him.

Linfield thought they had scored again before the half-hour mark, but Darragh Leahy had his goal ruled out due to a foul committed by Baird on Paul Doyle during the play.
Dunne made another significant contribution just before halftime, executing a vital double save, first blocking Millar’s shot and then recovering quickly to thwart Fitzpatrick’s follow-up.
Dungannon had an opportunity early in the second half when Bigirimana set up Leo Alves, but his left-footed shot drifted wide.
Linfield then hit the post themselves, with a cross from Millar finding McClean, whose shot ricocheted off the near post.
As conditions worsened, Fitzpatrick saw another shot kept out by Dunne as Linfield pressed for a second goal.

The long-awaited second goal came in the 64th minute when Millar’s through ball slipped past Dungannon defender Danny Wallace, allowing Fitzpatrick to sprint clear, slide the ball through Dunne’s legs, and roll it into the empty net.
Fitzpatrick completed his hat-trick 20 minutes from time, converting from close range after receiving a low cross from Ethan McGee.
Dungannon managed to score a consolation goal in the final three minutes when Kobei Moore connected with a through ball from James Knowles to score, but it was too late to impact the match’s outcome.
