How Roberto De Zerbi is…

Tottenham pulled themselves out of the relegation zone on Sunday with a significant victory against Aston Villa. This marked their second consecutive win and extended their unbeaten streak to three matches.

Things seem to be looking up for Tottenham, a stark contrast to the situation under Igor Tudor. Many were caught off guard by this turnaround. De Zerbi is known for his assertive style, both on and off the pitch, openly challenging players and demanding they reach higher standards. Yet, he has managed to soften his approach at Tottenham, adopting a more measured and adaptable stance with the media.

In previous press conferences, Tudor consistently called for greater commitment from the Spurs players, often echoing the club’s gloomy atmosphere. Instead of uplifting the spirits of a struggling squad, his negativity seemed to deepen their despair, overshadowing the evident potential that players had demonstrated over the years.

De Zerbi appears to have mastered the challenge more effectively than Tudor. Rather than maintaining a demanding persona, he has dialed down the intensity, instilling confidence in players that they are capable of winning matches.

Last month, he confidently asserted that Tottenham has the potential to triumph in every fixture, stating: “Every one of us knows it is a tough moment, a difficult situation, but we have another five games, 15 points, and this team is capable of winning five games in a row.”

Initially, this statement was met with skepticism, but the approach has paid off, resulting in Spurs earning seven points from their last nine possible.

Instead of contributing to a negative narrative, he illuminated a pathway to hope for the fans, signaling that a brighter future is within reach.

Prior to the Villa match, he criticized the media for perpetuating negativity and focused on the resources at his disposal.

“The narrative says, ‘we are unlucky, we have too many injuries, we lost Xavi Simons who was crucial for us, and our medical team is not good enough, and the pitch quality is lacking, making it impossible to win consecutively because we haven’t had success since 2026.’”

“I find these statements to be purely negative and nonsensical.”

“People say it’s impossible, that we are all in tears and facing relegation. But not yet. We have to give our all, and to do that, we must embrace the challenge.”

In many ways, this response is somewhat uncharacteristic of De Zerbi. It deviates from the assertive demeanor he displayed during his tenure at Sassuolo.

However, his adaptability is a positive indication for both him and his future. Typically associated with a rigid approach to management and playing style, he has adjusted to tackle the significant challenge before him.

It is evident that a club of Tottenham’s stature cannot afford relegation, and De Zerbi has taken this task seriously. While focusing on survival, he has also begun to lay the groundwork for his long-term vision. This was apparent in the game against Villa, where players showcased high energy, pressing tactics, effective positioning, and sharp passing—hallmarks of De Zerbi’s coaching philosophy.

While there is still room for improvement, signs are increasingly pointing towards a promising direction.
