Pep Guardiola humorously hopes Arsenal will eventually allow a goal, as Manchester City strives to remain in the title contention.
In the wake of Arsenal’s victory over Burnley and Manchester City’s triumph against Bournemouth, the Gunners have solidified their lead at the top of the Premier League standings.
Although Bournemouth entered the weekend as Arsenal’s closest rivals, it would have been unwise to underestimate City’s position in the title race.
Currently, City trails Arsenal by six points and is one point ahead of the defending champions, Liverpool. However, they need Arsenal to slip up to close the gap, and Pep Guardiola lightheartedly remarked on Sunday that he is still anticipating the day the Gunners concede even a single goal.
“Hopefully, Arsenal can concede a goal one day, right?” Guardiola quipped, adding, “It’s not easy for them.”
He emphasized that while they lacked energy earlier, they have regained it since the World Cup, stating, “I have the feeling that we are improving. But it’s just the beginning, with 10 games played and 28 more to go. A lot can still happen, and it’s crucial to remain close.”
Arsenal’s last concession in any competition occurred during their match against Newcastle United on September 28th.
Following Nick Woltemade’s header in the 33rd minute, the Gunners have gone 687 minutes without conceding, meaning almost 11-and-a-half hours have passed without their net being breached.
If Arsenal continues this streak of clean sheets for the remainder of the season, they will be in an excellent position to clinch the league title. At present, a single goal is sufficient for them to secure victory, with any additional goals serving as a bonus.
