PLAYER RATINGS | Wolfsburg…

Wolfsburg and Paderborn ended their first leg of the promotion/relegation play-off in a stalemate, with Paderborn’s resilient defense ensuring they remain in contention against a historically dominant Bundesliga opponent.

Since the play-off’s inception in 2009, only twice has the third-placed team from the 2. Bundesliga transitioned to the top tier of German football. However, Paderborn is now just 90 minutes away from achieving that milestone after successfully repelling Wolfsburg, who are striving for their 30th consecutive season in the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg vs Paderborn – Match Summary

Paderborn endured an early onslaught but made their mark with the first significant attempt of the match— their only chance in the first half— when Santiago Castaneda forced an early save from Kamil Grabara with a volley that followed a blocked header from Filip Bilbija.

This warning prompted Wolfsburg to step up their efforts, coming close through Jeanuël Belocian and Adam Daghim, with Dennis Seimen finally gathering a deflected cross from Christian Eriksen just before halftime, resulting in both teams heading into the break at a deadlock.

In the second half, Paderborn faced increased pressure, but Daghim’s cross prompted another save from Seimen. In response, Ralf Kettemann made substitutions, bringing on Steffen Tigges and Nick Bätzner to alleviate some of the defensive stress.

Belocian, playing as a right center-back, sent in a dangerous cross that Daghim headed, again challenging Paderborn’s goalkeeper to make a crucial save. Meanwhile, Dieter Hecking opted for a tactical change, substituting Jesper Lindstrøm and Mahmoud Amoura for Mattias Svanberg and Daghim.

Konstantinos Koulierakis then earned Wolfsburg a dangerous free-kick, taken by Eriksen, which forced Seimen into a spectacular stop with 20 minutes to spare.

In the closing moments, with Paderborn set to play the return match without Jonah Sticker, who received a second yellow card, they nearly shocked the hosts with a lob from Bilbija that was cleared off the line by a combination of Denis Vavro and Joakim Mæhle. Ultimately, neither side could find the net, leaving everything to play for in the return leg at Home Deluxe Arena on Monday night.
