Kevin Danso, a defender for Tottenham Hotspur, has asserted that he will not allow racist abuse to define him, following incidents of online harassment. After the Spurs’ match against Brighton, which ended in a 2-2 draw on April 18, Danso was targeted with derogatory messages on social media. The club has since reported the abuse to law enforcement.

The 27-year-old player shared with ITV News that he had faced racist abuse while playing in Germany but did not disclose it at the time. “In the past, I experienced it as a child but kept it to myself,” Danso explained. “This time, I felt it was crucial to speak out and raise awareness about it.” He emphasized, “This abuse won’t change how I play, and those who engage in it are simply wasting their time.”

During the Premier League’s No Room For Racism campaign in April, the abuse was particularly disheartening. The Premier League issued a statement condemning such behavior, declaring that “discriminatory abuse has absolutely no place in football or in society.” They further stated, “Anyone who resorts to abuse is not a genuine fan and is not welcome in our sport,” emphasizing the need for collective action among clubs, football organizations, law enforcement, and social media platforms to combat this issue.

Joining Tottenham permanently in May 2025, Danso has learned to manage the impact of such abuse on his performance. “I strive not to let it affect how I view myself or my game, as I aim to maintain a high standard of play,” he said. Despite growing up in Austria, where he often faced racism, he feels he has developed the resilience to handle these challenges. “It does not define me, and it certainly does not belong in the world of football.”

In related incidents, Merseyside Police arrested an Everton fan during a match against Manchester City for alleged racist abuse directed at Antoine Semenyo. A 47-year-old man was previously arrested and charged after Semenyo received racist abuse while playing for Bournemouth earlier this season.

Furthermore, several players were targeted during one weekend in February, prompting an investigation by the UK Football Policing Unit into the incidents involving players such as Lutsharel Geertruida, Hannibal Mejbri, Wesley Fofana, and Tolu Arokodare.
