Seamus Coleman Departs…

Seamus Coleman will conclude his 17-year tenure at Everton this summer, marking the end of a distinguished era in which he became one of the club’s most significant players.

The right-back has yet to decide whether he’ll continue his playing career elsewhere or retire to accept a coaching position at Everton.

Coleman, who turns 38 later this year, has served as Everton’s captain since 2019 and holds the club record for most Premier League appearances, totaling 372.

The Republic of Ireland international is renowned as one of the best bargains in Premier League history, having joined from Sligo Rovers in 2009 for a mere £60,000 — a fee immortalized in songs by Everton fans.

However, while Coleman has played a pivotal role off the field in recent years, he has faced a challenging season this year, managing just three appearances in the top division due to injuries.

Everton is expected to seek a right-back in the upcoming summer transfer window. Nonetheless, if Coleman participates in either of their last two matches — at home against Sunderland or away at Tottenham — he will surpass club legend Dixie Dean to become 10th on the all-time appearance list, amassing a total of 434 appearances across all competitions.

Coleman, a member of the PFA team of the year in 2013-14, is the only player to have participated in both of David Moyes‘ managerial tenures at Everton and even took charge once during a caretaker spell after Sean Dyche left the club.

Coleman stated: “After more than 17 years at this amazing football club, I’ve decided this season will be my final one as a player here.

“I am incredibly grateful to the fans for their unmatched support. You have helped me in ways beyond measure. I have always strived to put Everton Football Club first, and your love for the club means everything to me. Living in the city, I see you all every day, and I’ve taken your passion for Everton into the dressing room to convey to my teammates how much the club signifies to its supporters.

“I also want to extend my gratitude to my managers, teammates, and all the staff at Everton. They have witnessed my highs and lows, but what has always mattered most is Everton. Thank you for helping me grow as a captain and teammate. This is a remarkable football club filled with extraordinary people.”

“Following such a significant decision, I plan to take some time over the summer to reflect on my future and what is next for my family. My love for Everton is well-known, and I also hold a tremendous affection for Ireland.”

“The club has been incredible to me. They’ve provided an opportunity for me to remain involved. The management and staff have been fantastic, and since this is such a crucial decision regarding my future, I intend to take a well-deserved vacation to reflect on what has been an unforgettable journey as an Everton player.”

Coleman transferred from the League of Ireland and had a brief loan spell at Blackpool before cementing his place in the Everton lineup.

He concluded: “Arriving here at 20 years old from Sligo Rovers, I was just hoping to make an impression to earn a spot on the bench. To think that I have since become the player with the most Premier League appearances for Everton and captained this great club is beyond my wildest dreams.

“Everton will always be my club. I’m proud to have been here long enough to say that I have a team I will support for life. My family, both here and in Ireland, are loyal Evertonians forever. It’s a special feeling, knowing that in the years to come, we’ll always be cheering for Everton.”

“This will always be my football club. Thank you for allowing me to be part of it for over 17 years.”
