Arne Slot expressed confidence in his future as Liverpool head coach for the coming season, despite rising dissatisfaction among fans.
Slot faced criticism from the Anfield crowd after substituting Rio Ngumoha during the recent 1-1 draw against Chelsea. The team’s disappointing performance in their Premier League title defense has led to calls for his dismissal this summer, especially as rumors swirl around Xabi Alonso — a fan favorite who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 — potentially taking over at Chelsea.
When asked about his future, Slot responded, “I don’t think I’m the only one making that decision, but I have every reason to believe I will be the Liverpool manager next season. First, I am contracted to this club, and second, based on our discussions, I believe this is the case.”
He acknowledged the frustrations stemming from this season, particularly when compared to last season, stating, “This hasn’t been a great season by any standards.” He added, “Criticism is normal when results don’t meet expectations. Everyone, including the players, the manager, and the entire club, receives their share of scrutiny when you don’t win the league.”
Slot continued, “In today’s football landscape, if a manager or club doesn’t perform well, debates around their future arise — and it’s not limited to Liverpool. It’s a universal reality. While I respect people’s right to their opinions, the discourse is far more public now than it was 10 or 15 years ago.”

Despite Liverpool’s lackluster season, Slot’s team could secure a place in next season’s Champions League with a win against Aston Villa on Friday. The squad may welcome back several key players at Villa Park, including Mohamed Salah, who has been sidelined for the last two matches due to a muscle injury.
“Ibou [Konate] is fit and trained with the team. Mo [Salah] will be available tomorrow, but only for a limited time. Hopefully, we can utilize him. Alisson [Becker] returned to training, and we’ll assess whether he is ready to play or needs another week of recovery.
“Florian [Wirtz] is being treated for a stomach infection and is on antibiotics. We’ll evaluate his status for tomorrow’s match.”
